Cholesterol is used by the body for numerous actions, including building cell membranes, synthesizing vitamin D, hormones, and bile acids. It is a lipid that circulates in the bloodstream and there are two type of cholesterol, and you have probably already heard about them, and they are

LDL (Low Density Lipid) – which is the "bad" cholesterol and can stick to arterial walls and create blockages that result in irregular Blood Pressure, Clots, Strokes and Heart attacks. It becomes more dangerous when LDL is converted into a toxic form of oxidized LDL by oxygen free radicals in the blood and it may occur in a person with low LDL too.
  • HDL (High Density Lipid) - which is the “good” and it actually help in protecting you from heart disease

In Ayurveda, certain herbs,  treatments, lifestyle and remedies can help lower high cholesterol, these are

  1. Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water daily
  2. Garlic helps in lowering cholesterol, prevent blood clots, reduce blood pressure and protect against infections, having two to three garlic cloves a day can break down bad cholesterol and free it from the arterial walls.
  3. Turmeric has a protective action on the heart, it helps in lowering the levels of LDL cholesterol and in cutting down on the build-up of plaque on the walls of the arteries. Adding a pinch of turmeric powder to the curries and vegetable preparations or with hot Milk are the best ways to ensure to get your daily dose of this powerful herb.
  4. Ginger also helps to cut back on your cholesterol levels. You can take ginger tea to help fight sore throats and control cholesterol, or you can add it to your food to obtain the same cholesterol lowering effects
  5. Holy Basil or Tulsi  Leaves is a magical herb which not help in managing cholesterol levels but also useful in reducing your blood sugar, toxins and in counteracting stress
  6. Cinnamon can help to lower your triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and even your blood sugar .It should be taken in small amounts
  7. Guggul or Commiphora wightii There are several products made from Guggul that helps to reduce high cholesterol however such product should be used only after medical advice
  8. Arjuna or Terminalia Arjuna  dissolves cholesterol from the arteries, however such products should be used only after medical advice
  9. Eat lot of Astringent foods which includes pulses or dried beans, vegetables, such as the cruciferous family (broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower) and fruits such as apples and pears
