Amazing Facts about Calendar

Do you know the first month of calendar started from March and February was last month of year?  Yes, it looks slightly weird but that is a fact. Let drill down to amazing history of our current calendar

The present format is the outcome of lot of evolution and of discretionary changes, to the extent that not only order but names of months were also modified

First six month name from March till August were changed entirely during the course of history and somehow September onwards survived.  Perhaps you would have realized  by now , September indicating Septa, seventh from March, October indicating Octa (Eight), November indicating Nine and December indicating decade or tenth.

The first 6 months were renamed to honor the God and dignitaries, this is what had happened

# March was renamed after the God of War, “Mars”

# April was derived from “Aphrodite”, the Goddess of love and beauty

# After paying homage to  the God of War and the Goddess of Love, the next and obvious were ancestors and thus the third month was renamed as May , derived from the Latin word “maiores” meaning elders

#The fourth was obviously for continuity of  upcoming generations, and thus Latin word  “juvenis” meaning young people was considered for June

# In respect to Julius Caesar, the July became new name for Quintilis, meaning fifth. Name “Julian” Calendar also evolved that time from Juius Caesar

# To match status equal to Caesar,  Sextills, meaning sixth,  was renamed as August to honour Augustus Caesar

Aries, first zodiac sign, for people born in March is in alignment with initial order of month and perhaps, as focus had remained on month, the zodiac order is still close to original

Infact, the Hindu Calendar, which is  the oldest format in the world , starts with its first Month falling in March (named Chaitra), along with same order of 12 zodiac sign & lordship from Aries as 1st (Mesha in Sanskrit and ruled by Mars) to Pisces as 12th (Meena In Sanskrit and ruled by Jupiter) and with same ordering of 7 days in week.  There is sparkling, magnificent and marvelous science, logic and wisdom behind the sequence of month and zodiacs, which I am keeping as discussion point for some next blog
